Rebecca Holland

Art Psychotherapist and EMDR Therapist

My Story

More than 10 years ago I started my journey in health and social care. I initially worked as a HCA (Healthcare assistant) for individuals with Dementia. Whilst's using creativity in my role I became very interested in the positive effects art-making can have on people's wellbeing and memory. There I discovered art psychotherapy and decide to complete a masters degree. Whilst training I also progressed as a HCA in other areas including The Epilepsy society and within NHS acute inpatient wards.

During my 6 years as an art psychotherapist I got to experience many great opportunities including providing individual and group art therapy within; primary, secondary and higher educational settings, adult community mental health service, residential homes and substance use charities including CGL and the Amy Winehouse Foundation. During this time I also facilitated well-being social groups for Watford Women Centre and curated their first Art exhibition at Watford Museum.

I'm now employed part time by London Borough of Sutton Social Services where I offer art psychotherapy for child and young people and EMDR therapy for young people and adults. I also co-facilitate the trauma informed practice training for all staff employed by LBS and co-facilitate the therapeutic parenting groups.

These experiences shaped who I am as a practitioner and inform my private work I offer online and within Brighton. I feel privileged I got to work with many individuals over the years , all who i have learnt from.

My Approach to therapy

My knowledge is rooted in psychoanalysis with an interest in attachment theory, trauma and neuroscience. I highly value the therapeutic relationship which I believe provides safety when processing experiences associated with trauma and loss. I am very passionate about art-making to help to support this journey and encourage the individual to recognise their inner resilience. I have found EMDR Therapy can produce significant healing for people but always believe this requires being collaborative, to go at the person's pace and discuss what they wish to gain from the sessions.

I thinks its vital to see psychotherapy through an intersectional lens that embraces the multiplicity of human existence. This means I consider an individual’s Gender, Geography, Race, Religion, Age, Ability, Appearance, Class, Culture, Ethnicity, Education, Employment, Sexuality, Sexual orientation, Spirituality. This helps to hold in mind people’s overlapping identities and experiences to understand the complexity of prejudices they may face.
